Project Overview

Upside down: Collaborative Living “is a project that aims to combat housing and relational poverty by proposing an innovative model of living aimed at making people aware and active in the creation of their own living environment.

The project, which will be carried out in the historic San Berillo district of Catania, provides for the creation of social housing in co-housing where people from wandering experiences will be hosted. Their housing autonomy path will be favored by the activation of the beneficiaries engaged in redevelopment and integration activities with the reference context.

More Information

How was the Project born?

The project was born in the context of the San Berillo district, one of the first multi-ethnic districts of the city of Catania. In the neighborhood there is a very serious housing problem, due to the poverty of foreign inhabitants who often live in precarious housing.

In the absence of interventions by the institutions, the project was created to respond to this housing problem, with particular attention to people seeking asylum.

Challenges in the implementation

1. Promote the housing of homeless people.

Through the project activities involving the construction of housing, it was possible to respond to the need and win the challenge. Even if it has failed to meet the needs of all the people in need.

2.Promote the participation of the inhabitants of the neighborhood in social and democratic life.

The opening of the social cafeteria has allowed greater involvement of the inhabitants of the neighborhood. Also the realization of some public initiatives, such as assemblies and meetings to discuss community problems together. However, involvement has not yet fully improved the conditions of conflict and violence found in the neighborhood.

Potential of the good practice to be replicable

The project is absolutely replicable in all those cities in which housing problems exist for asylum seekers. Unfortunately, the Italian context is characterized by a lack of services for people who have applied for the recognition of refugee status but have not yet received a response from the institutions, or for people who receive a refusal to request asylum and make a judicial appeal. . There is therefore a very large group of people who, despite asking for the right to asylum, find themselves homeless.

In these cases, the project can be one of the tools to respond from below to the housing needs of migrants.
